Share Your Thoughts on Environmental Legislation
February 10, 2012
Dear Friends,
I’d like to invite your presence to a very important event to preview upcoming environmental legislation and meet the individuals who work closely with the legislators to make positive change in Illinois. As the state continues to address the difficult budget deficit and recovering economy, it can be easy to lose sight of our responsibility to be good stewards of the environment. However, I believe good environmental policy and sustainable economic recovery can go hand in hand.
My Thoughts on the State of the State Address
February 3, 2012
Dear Friends,
This Wednesday I was in Springfield to hear Governor Quinn’s State of the State Address. If you did not hear his speech, you can download a written copy of the remarks here . The Governor’s 40 minute address focused on what we accomplished in the past year and his plans for 2012 including 3 tax breaks, a new Illinois Jobs Agenda and launch of the Illinois Foreclosure Prevention Network. For me, there was a bit too much time spent on what we have accomplished and not enough time spent on what we need to get done in the coming year or specifics on how he plans to lead us there. Recent budget projections should have been a wakeup call that dramatic changes are needed to pull the state out of this mess, but the Governor does not seem to have gotten that message. Instead, the ideas that were presented lacked detail and focus. As I told the Daily Herald, I was disappointed by the lack of depth in the Governor’s speech and wish he would have explained how he is going to execute the plans he introduced.
Improving Government Accountability
January 27, 2012
Dear Friends,
On January 1, many Illinois drivers were met with an unpleasant surprise: toll rates that were nearly doubled. At a time when many are struggling financially and already facing higher taxes, Metra rates and utility fees, further increases on working families are unacceptable.
Join Me Tuesday to Share Your Ideas
January 20, 2012
Dear Friends,
When I became your state representative just over two years ago, I made it one of my top priorities to address Illinois’ many budget problems. Important progress has been made, and my Budgeting for Results legislation has laid the groundwork to fundamentally overhaul the way our state government spends its money.
Illinois' State Credit Worst in Nation; Help Me Change That
January 12, 2012
Dear Friends,
Is there a silver lining in Illinois’ recent credit rating downgrade? This week, while Moody’s downgraded the state’s credit rating, our outlook for the future has been upgraded from negative to stable. Both actions were influenced by the Budgeting for Results law I introduced during my first budget negotiations.
Happy New Year!
December 31, 2011
Dear Friends,
I hope this newsletter finds you happy and healthy as we head into the New Year. However you choose to celebrate this weekend, may it be filled with joy and the promise of a fulfilling year ahead. Please be aware that while recent national news stories have drawn attention to a AAA program providing free rides home to inebriated drivers on New Year’s Eve, this program is not available in Illinois. I strongly encourage anyone who plans to consume alcohol this weekend to plan ahead with a designated driver. If you will be celebrating elsewhere in the US, please click here to visit the AAA website and see list of locations where free rides will be available on New Year’s Eve.

I want to take this moment to wish you and your family a happy holiday. Whether you are celebrating Christmas, Chanukah, or any other holiday, this is a wonderful season for spending time with family and friends, being thankful for the blessings we’ve received, and sharing those blessings with others. As always, remember to drive carefully and stay safe while traveling.
Keeping and Creating Jobs in Illinois
December 16, 2011
Dear Friends,
I am pleased that a compromise was able to be reached this week and the legislature was able to pass Senate Bill 397, the corporate tax incentive bill. I supported SB397 because it is consistent with my vote last spring against the personal and corporate income tax increase. In fact, I would have preferred we rolled back the tax increase entirely, and I am sponsoring House Bill 3917 which would do just that.

Happy Thanksgiving
November 23, 2011
Dear Friends,
Thanksgiving is a time when we are reminded to take a moment and express gratitude for all we have. Our community is blessed with excellent schools, vibrant community organizations, dedicated law and safety officers, and many outstanding small businesses. These things and much more combine to make this area a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Today, I’d like to highlight two great facets of our community in particular.
Listening to You on Senior Issues, Business, Education, and More
November 18, 2011
Dear Friends,
As one of the primary caregivers for my parents, I understand and deeply care about the challenges that seniors face on a daily basis. As a member of the House Committee on Aging, it is my responsibility to ensure our focus is on the right issues in Springfield. In order to hear directly from area seniors, I am currently making my semi-annual visits to local senior homes. Whenever I visit these facilities, the well-informed residents bring lively conversation and interesting questions.
